Important travel tips, local customs, and practical information for your journey to Nepal's remote Dolpa region
Explore Dolpo: The Hidden Jewel of the Himalayas
Dolpo is a land suspended in time, offering one of the last truly authentic trekking experiences in Nepal. Situated in the rain-shadow of the Dhaulagiri massif, this remote region is part of the Shey Phoksundo National Park—Nepal’s largest national park. From the emerald turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake to the ancient Bon Po monasteries of Ringmo, Dolpo offers a landscape of rugged cliffs, high passes, and Tibetan culture that has remained unchanged for centuries.
Key Highlights:
Phoksundo Lake (3,611m): The deepest and most mesmerizing lake in Nepal, famous for its ever-changing aquamarine colors.
Culture: Home to the ancient Bon religion and Tibetan-style villages like Ringmo and Dho Tarap.
Wildlife: A prime habitat for the elusive Snow Leopard, Blue Sheep (Naur), and Himalayan Musk Deer.
The Gateway: All treks begin here in Dunai (2,140m), the administrative headquarters and the perfect acclimatization stop before heading into the wild.
Best Season: Spring (April–May) & Autumn (September–November). Permits: Special Restricted Area Permits are required for both Lower and Upper Dolpo.
