🛫 The Main Route: Via Nepalgunj Hub

This is the only scheduled and reliable route to reach Dolpa.

Since there are no regular direct flights from Kathmandu, you must transit through Nepalgunj in the southern plains.

Step 1: Reach Nepalgunj

• From Kathmandu: You can take a 50-minute flight (Buddha Air, Yeti, Shree) or an overnight bus to Nepalgunj.

• Transit Tip: Flights to Dolpa depart early in the morning (6:00 AM – 10:30 AM) to beat the mountain winds. You generally cannot connect on the same day. You will likely need to spend one night in Nepalgunj.

Step 2: The Mountain Flight (Nepalgunj ➔ Juphal)

• Flight Duration: 35 – 45 Minutes.

• Airlines: Tara Air, Summit Air, Nepal Airlines.

• The Experience: A thrilling flight that takes you from the hot plains, through the Bheri river gorge, landing at Juphal Airport (2,475m)—the only airstrip in Dolpa.

• Schedule: Flights operate daily but are strictly weather-dependent. Cancellations due to high winds in Juphal are common, even if the sun is shining in Nepalgunj.

🚫 The "Direct Flight" Myth (Kathmandu ➔ Juphal)

Many guests ask us about flying directly from Kathmandu.

• Reality: There are no regular daily flights directly connecting Kathmandu to Dolpa.

• Exception: Occasionally, airlines like Summit Air may run a "Charter" or specific seasonal flight during peak trekking months (Spring/Autumn) for large expedition groups. Unless you charter the whole plane, do not rely on this option.

🚙 Arrival: Juphal to Dunai (The Last Mile)

Once you land in Juphal, you are almost there! The district headquarters, Dunai, is just a short trip away.

• By Jeep:

  • Time: 30 – 45 Minutes.

  • Cost: Approx. NPR 350 – 450 per person (Shared Jeep).

  • Route: The road winds down from the airstrip to the Thuli Bheri River.

• By Foot:

  • Time: 2 – 3 Hours.

  • The Walk: If you are here to trek, why wait? The walk down through Kalagauda village is scenic, easy, and helps you stretch your legs before the real adventure begins.

⚠️ Important Traveler Tips

1. Baggage Allowance: Small Twin Otter/Dornier planes have strict limits. usually 10kg Check-in + 5kg Hand Carry. Excess baggage is charged (approx. NPR 100/kg) or may be left behind if the plane is overweight.

2. The "Wind" Factor: Juphal is a STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) airport. Flights must land before noon because strong winds pick up in the Thuli Bheri valley by afternoon.

3. Buffer Days: Always add 1-2 extra days to your itinerary. If it rains or is cloudy in Juphal, flights will be cancelled. Being stuck for a day is part of the Dolpa experience!
